Wolverines News · Martin Competes in State Singles Tournament

Congratulations again to senior, Tennis player Barrett Martin who was selected to play in the SCHSL State Singles Championships this past Monday and Tuesday in Florence, SC.  Barrett was recognized as one of the top players in her region as well as A and would be matched up against the best players from A, AA, and AAA teams across the state.  This is an absolute honor to be a part of and I am so glad that she was able to participate and experience this tournament.  Barrett would be matched up in the first round against Powdersville and would have an early 5-3 lead in the first set, but unfortunately could not get the all important 6thgame to win the set and would fall 7-5.  The second set Barrett again would get a lead, but her opponent did a really good job of limiting her mistakes and would take the second set and the match 7-5, 6-3.  The bracket worked out to give Barrett a bye in the first round of the back draw portion which would be a blessing and a curse.  Barrett had to endure a 3.5+ hour gap in between her matches, which is tough to mentally and physically prepare for.  Barrett would be matched up with another young lady from Powdersville in her next match.  She played well, but again her opponent did a good job of limiting her mistakes and keeping the ball in play.  The second match would go to Barrett’s opponent with a score of 8-2.  I believe Barrett played well throughout her two matches, but she could not get the deuce points to go her way.  The matches were very close and the scores (especially in the second match) are not indicative of that.

Barrett had a very successful season going 13-4 from the #1 position this season and finishing her career with 59 wins at Whitmire High.  I am so proud of the work she has put in and the benefits that she has reaped from it.  Barrett is an exceptional teammate and player and has really developed her tennis skills over the years to become quite the competitor.  Congratulations, again, as you represented us all beautifully!
